Hi everyone! This is super hard for us but here is little Roman’s story! We will start from the very beginning! When I was around 26 weeks pregnant maternal fetal medicine referred me to a Peds cardiologist. They told me there was nothing wrong but they couldn’t get all the imaging for his heart. The cardiologist had better technology and get all the imaging of his heart better than they could. When I went the cardiologist was concerned that I was by myself. I told her what the Dr. Told me at MFM. She apologized and said there was major concerns. She told me that Roman has Aortic Valve Stenosis. His valve was not opening and closing at 100% and it was working in overdrive to push the blood thru. They scheduled me back in 4 weeks to see if it was going to improve, worsen or stay the same. This would give us a bigger picture of his heart when I delivered him. When I came back his heart did not get better, unfortunately it got a little worse. They told me that they did not feel comfortable with me delivering at Flower Hospital like I planned. That he would be rushed to the NICU at Toledo right after he was born leaving me at Flower. I changed my birthing plan and switched OBs. A week later the cardiologist called me with some major concerns. We talked about some options that would happen when Roman was born. Things like what surgeries would need to be done. There was 3 options. The best case scenario would be the procedure he had done. She even mentioned open heart surgery. She told me about how he would get life flighted to UofM to have the procedure and then 24 hours later he would come back to Toledo. I told her if that was the best case scenario for Roman then we were on board. 24 hours later she called me back and told me that I really should deliver at UofM now and that would be best. I again had to change my birthing plans and change care of service. At 36 weeks pregnant I went to UofM to meet the Peds cardiologist, my OB and had a couple of other appointments. After having another ultrasound on Romans heart, the cardiologist looked at the imaging and met with me. He looked at me with big concerns and told me that he doesn’t feel comfortable with me delivering at 39 weeks. He gave me 6 days to prepare and told me I was going to deliver that Thursday! Fast forward to Thursday, and my delivery went smoothly and as planned. The very next day he had his procedure, balloon valvuloplasty. They put a balloon in his valve to open it up. They let us know that everything went as planned. 3 weeks have went by while he has been up at the hospital. His blood pressure has been low. He is now on his second type of blood pressure medication to help raise it and also help with the squeeze of his heart. He has to get blood work done as well to see his levels of potassium, electrolytes and some other things. His potassium has been high and that is a side effect of these medications. After his surgery he had a feeding tube one for 2 weeks. He decided to be a rebel and pull his out and they decided to keep it out. There are concerns with his eating. He needs to start eating more but with his heart he gets tired at times so each feeding is different. If he does not improve then he will need to get his feeding tube back in. Crossing our fingers that he improves and gets better so we can keep it out! At this time the girls are back in school and Kyle is back to work. This leaves myself & Ry to drop the girls off at school then head up to the hospital to see Roman for a few hours. We then come back get the girls from school. Once Kyle is home we then go back up. This is a lot of back & forth for us and tons of driving. Unfortunately Ronald McDonald house did not have a room for us to stay up there so we are stuck with the driving. This is exhausting and a lot of gas. Please continue to pray for Roman so he can come home! Pray that he continues to get better and that we will find a medication that will help his blood pressure to be normal. We appreciate all the support & prayers that have been provided so far.
